We belong to the VISAVET Research Centre from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). We work in research and teaching on animal infectious diseases.

  • El principal objetivo de VACDIVA es resolver el problema de la Peste Porcina Africana (PPA) en Europa y en los países afectados, desarrollando vacunas seguras y efectivas para cerdos domésticos y jabalíes, tests de diagnóstico y herramientas para estrategias de control y erradicación en Europa
  • Somos Laboratorio de Referencia de la Organización Mundial de la Sanidad Animal (OIE) en Peste Porcina Africana (PPA) y Peste Equina Africana PEA.
  • Realizamos el diagnóstico de los principales virus que afectan a las abejas, siendo pioneros en el desarrollo y puesta a punto de nuevas técnicas para su estudio.
  • La investigación epidemiologica de la Peste Porcina Clásica y Africana (PPC y PPA) son dos de nuestras prioridades.
  • En SUAT trabajamos en la aplicación de la termografía a la sanidad animal, especialmente ventajosa en animales en libertad y de zoo.

We cannot exclude that the Schmallenberg virus has entered Spain

 New published by EFE agency in which the professor José Manuel Sánchez Vizcaíno says that althought there is a "high probability" that the pathogen did not affect Spain in its first wave, it is absolutely necessary to wait before discard safely the presence of the virus, due to the difficulty to detect the virus until abortions occur and the warm autumn with proliferation of the vectors.

Fourth GF-TADS for Europe Steering Committee meeting

FAO y OIELa FAO junto a la OIE organizan el "Fourth GF-TADS for Europe Steering Committee meeting (SC4) of the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases for the Europe" que tendrá lugar en Bruselas los días 26 y 27 de enero.

El Profesor Sánchez-Vizcaíno ha sido invitado a participar con una ponencia sobre el estado de la investigación en la Peste Porcina Africana.

2012, SUAT 10º Anniversary

The SUAT team want to congratulate the new year2012. For us it is especially important because we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our research group and want to celebrate and share with you by organizing a conference in the month of October to which you are all invited.

We also want to remind you of September 4 to 7 will be held the IX International Congress of Veterinary Virology at which you are also invited and already have official website: www.esvv2012.com. From February 1 will enable the delivery of communications and of entries.

ASF diagnostic course


From November 28th to December 2nd, we received the visit of two experts from the Russian National Reference Laboratory for the diagnosis of African Swine Fever (ASF).

This course is framed within the "Twinning Project" between the reference laboratory of the OIE for ASF (VISAVET-UCM) and the National Laboratory of Virology and Microbiology Research in Veterinary Pokrov, Russia. 

Twinning laboratories (Rusia/Spain)

This course was mainly focused on practical learning and training in classical virology diagnostic techniques on ASF. During the week, participants worked in the VISAVET Centre Biosafety level 3 Area (BSL-3), learning the culture of macrophages, hemadsorption, direct immunofluorescence and serological techniques (ELISA and IB).
