Dr José Manuel Sánchez-Vizcaino gave a seminar the last 18th of March in Bellaterra after visiting CReSA. He talked about the current epidemiological situation of the African swine fever virus (ASFV) in Africa, the Caucasus and the Russian Federation.

Animal health in the veterinary environment
Professor Jose Manuel Sánchez-Vizcaíno attended on February 18, as a speaker at the First National Congress of Veterinary Science students.

2011 World Veterinary Year
The world’s first veterinary school was founded in Lyon, France, in 1761, shortly followed by the Alfort veterinary school, near Paris, in 1764, both of them at the initiative of French veterinarian Claude BOURGELAT. This means that 2011 will mark the 250th world anniversary of veterinary education.
By setting up the world’s first veterinary training institutions, BOURGELAT created the veterinary profession itself. Thus, 2011 will also mark the 250th world anniversary of the veterinary profession.
Bourgelat’s genius did not stop there. As a result of his fruitful collaboration with surgeons in Lyon, he was also the first scientist who dared to suggest that studying animal biology and pathology would help to improve our understanding of human biology and pathology. 2011 will also mark the 250th anniversary of the concept of comparative pathobiology, without which modern medicine would never have emerged.

9th International Congress of the ESVV
During the 8th International Congress of the European Society for Veterinary Virology (ESVV) in September 2009 our Veterinary Faculty was selected to organize the 9th Congress of the Society. This Congress will be held in September 5th,6th and 7th, 2012.
The ESVV first meeting was in 1989 and actually has over 170 veterinary members from other disciplines related to virology, from about 21 countries.
This society meets annually at a conference that seeks to promote the exchange of knowledge and methodology and collaboration between institutions and research groups. Therefore, it is our pride that Spain has been chosen to host the 2012 edition.
“One World, One Health, One Virology” , will be the title of the 2012 edition, and these are some of the topics covered:
- Emerging viruses
- Viral zoonoses
- Epidemiology, risk assessment and modeling
- Enzootic viral infectious
- Vaccines, antivirals and viral immunology
- Viral diagnosis
- Clinical virology
- Evolution and genomics
- Host-virus interactions
The novelty of this edition is the union for a day with the international conference celebrating the European Society for Clinical Virology (ESCV).
